What is fractal art?

A Koru

Fractals originate from the field of mathematics and are fine-detailed, irregular geometric shapes comprised of self-similar forms. They also exist in our natural environment and one of the best examples of a fractal in New Zealand is the emerging koru shaped frond of our native punga.

Looking closely at an emerging punga frond you will see smaller replicas of the koru shape encapsulated within the larger koru. As the frond unfurls it reveals finer and more delicate koru shapes. A fractal is similar but it has an infinite number of complex shapes.

Take the fractal art tour:

The punga is a good way of explaining fractals. Well done.
